Kenny’s Castaways Closes

A longtime NYC nightclub where Bruce Springsteen played some of his first New York shows shuttered Oct. 1 after 36 years.

Kenny’s Castaways in Greenwich Village has drawn artists including Patti Smith, Yoko Ono and the Fugees over the years but overhead and dwindling audiences led to the closure.

“We’ve been struggling,” venue co-owner Maria Kenny told the New York Times Sept. 30. “The rents have become so astronomical around here that Mom-and-Pop places just can’t make it happen.” Singer/songwriter Willie Nile and the Smithereens headlined the farewell show.
