PM Apologises
To Kim Dotcom
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key apologised to Megaupload.com founder Kim Dotcom, for NZ’s secret service illegally spying on his personal communications as part of a FBI investigation into alleged copyright infringement.
It led to raids on his home and his arrest in January. Key said the Government Communications Security Bureau only has authority to spy on foreigners. Dotcom became a NZ resident since 2010. In June, a NZ court declared search warrants used in the raids illegal.
“[GCSB] have failed at the lowest hurdle,” Key said. “I’m personally disappointed. New Zealanders should be very disappointed.”
Dotcom’s new music site, Megabox, is close to launch.
The code for the new larger version of Megaupload is “90% done,” he tweeted Sept. 23.
All indications are Megabox will be more popular than the file-sharing Megaupload, which received 50 million hits a day.
Megabox will include email, VOIP and video app functions and sell music for which artists will receive royalties.
Dotcom told TorrentFreak, “We are building a massive global network. All non-US hosters will be able to connect servers and bandwidth.”
