Sapphires Movie Honoured

Australian box office hit “The Sapphires” was lauded at the Deadlys awards at the Sydney Opera House.

The movie – about four singers who entertained troops in Vietnam – gets a U.S. release in 2013 through The Weinstein Company. 

 
Scriptwriter Tony Briggs and the four members of the original Sapphires were awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Deadlys, which celebrates indigenous achievement in music, sports, films and community work. 
 
“The Sapphires” cast member Jessica Mauboy, a R&B hit-maker with Sony Music Entertainment Australia, won female artist of the year and for her “Galaxy” single. 
 
Other music winners were Gurrumul Yunupingu (male artist of the year), Last Kinection (band of the year), Troy Cassar-Daley (best album for Home), Yung Warriors (best hip-hop act) and newcomers Marcus Corowa and Thelma Plum.
