Tom Petty Auctioning His 1996 Jaguar
Bidding began today on Tom Petty’s 1996 Jaguar XJS convertible, which he describes as “my favorite car I ever owned.” The musician is auctioning the vehicle through eBay with proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders.
The description on the eBay auction promises that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member has taken good care of the convertible from the “completely straight, rust free” body of the car to the “soft and supple” leather seats. The car, which “has always been garage kept” and only has 39,675 miles, was serviced before the auction including an oil change/lube, all filters replaced, transmission fluid changed and the air conditioning fully charged.
And don’t worry about needing to buy new tires right away because the tires have “plenty of tread remaining.” The only imperfections to take note of are “a few inconspicuous chips in the paint and a few scuffs on the bumpers.”

To go along with the car, the winning bidder will receive a personalized autographed copy of the above photo.
“I have so many great memories associated with this car,” Petty said. “When I began dating Dana (my wife) I asked her what her favorite car was. So, I phoned the office and said I wanted a champagne convertible Jaguar XJS. The next day they delivered it to my house and showed me how everything worked and I took it for a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I was in heaven, as was Dana. This car has such and incredible design. My favorite car I ever owned. We sure are going to miss it.”
The same year Petty purchased the convertible – 1996 – was the last year Jaguar built the model, which began production in 1971. There were only 18,574 of the redesigned XJS convertibles ever made.
The auction got going today with a starting price of $100. As of the time of this post, 65 bids had submitted and the current bid was $25,000. You have 10 days to get your bid in before the auction ends on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. Pacific Time.
