Roberts Stadium Demo Stalls

A recent decision by officials in Evansville, Ind., could present an obstacle for a plan to raze the city’s Roberts Stadium to make way for a park.

City councilors voted 6-3 to block the transfer of $187,000 into a demolition fund Oct. 8, after the city’s mayor and parks board backed a plan to demo the building for roughly $960,000.

The plan previously faced a lawsuit from a local businessman and now, city councilors are calling for less costly options for the site or a sale.

“My motivation is to get money out of it,” Councilman Dan Adams told the local Courier Press. “I don’t think there’s been an honest try.”

A new park could reportedly cost as much as $5 million and councilors objected to long-term maintenance fees for the site, the paper said.
