Thorpe Joins Retro Tour

The late Billy Thorpe, one of Australia’s biggest stars in the ’60s and ’70s, appeared on the seven-city Long Way To The Top tour in early October via a hologram.

It was Thorpe, with his one-time road manager Michael Chugg, who came up with the idea of a tour to celebrate Australian music history 10 years ago.  Thorpe died in 2007.

In the 2012 sequel, Thorpe performed “Girls Of Summer” in the first part of the show, and returned to accompany Cold Chisel guitarist Ian Moss for his iconic chart topper, “Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy.”

Among the other artists who performed were Col Joye (later a promoter), Boston-born R&B singer Marcia Hines, John Paul Young who had a series of Top 10 hits in Europe, New Zealand-hailed bands Dragon and Mi-Sex, one-time Flying Burrito Brothers member Brian Cadd, singer-songwriter Russell Morris whose 1969 psychedelic freak-out “The Real Thing” saw the coming of age of Australian music, blues band Chain and prog-rockers Spectrum.
