Black Keys Settle Suits
The Black Keys have settled a pair of copyright infringement suits filed against Pizza Hut and Home Depot earlier this year.
The suits, filed in U.S. District Court in California, claimed Home Depot used elements of the band’s hit “Lonely Boy” in an ad promoting power tools without permission, and that Pizza Hut improperly used “Gold on the Ceiling” in a spot of its own.
Neither company received permission to use musical elements from the songs, the complaints noted. The ads did not include vocals.
While terms of the settlements were not disclosed, the Keys had sought unspecified damages of more than $75,000 per suit and an order preventing the continued use of the songs in the commercials.
According to court papers obtained by TheWrap, the parties have requested the suits remain on the docket until they finish documenting the settlements.
