Kinky Friedman’s ‘Bipolar’ Winter

The singer/songwriter/author/one-time Texas gubernatorial candidate continues his “Bipolar” tour of the U.S., this time playing a string of West Coast dates, as well as stopping in St. Louis, Tulsa, Denver and Salt Lake City. You can get Kinky beginning in Kansas City in late November.

Kinky Friedman’s legacy includes his new book co-written with Willie Nelson and appropriately titled, “Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die.”

During his 2006 run for governor of Texas, Friedman was often quoted as saying, “I’ll sign anything but bad legislation.” His campaign slogans included “Why The Hell Not,” “How Hard Can it Be” and “He Ain’t Kinky, He’s My Governor.” If only more political contests had a little Kinky in them.

This time around the man whose album legacy includes his 1973 debut, Sold American, 1976’s Lasso From El Paso and 2005’s They Ain’t Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore, has something to sell. Friedman will be hawking his new solo CD called Live From Woodstock, recorded on the first American leg of the “Bipolar” tour. Plus, many California shows will include tastings of “Kinky Friedman’s Man In Black Tequila.”

There’s also a production based on Friedman’s life and times. “Becoming Kinky” was written by “Always – Patsy Cline” creator Ted Swindley and road tours have starred Jesse Dayton. Dayton also recorded an album of Friedman’s songs. Titled Jesse Sings Kinky, the album is sure to keep those royalty checks flowing into Friedman’s Texas home.

Getting back to the “Bipolar” tour – New Jersey artist will Brian Molnar will open most shows. The Solana Beach, Calif., show scheduled for Dec. 10 is extra special because Friedman will co-headline the gig with the one and only Mojo Nixon.
