Yothu Yindi To Be Inducted

Yothu Yindi, the indigenous band that swept out of the Australian bush with the global 1991 hit “Treaty,” will be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

It is part of the ARIA awards, at the Sydney Entertainment Centre Nov. 29.

Mandawuy Yunupingu, who formed the band to incorporate the traditional didgeridoo and clapsticks with pop-dance sounds, will attend despite suffering advanced renal failure.

The induction is expected to feature Paul Kelly, who co-wrote “Treaty” demanding the Australian Government sign a treaty with First Australians, and Minister of Education Peter Garrett who as Midnight Oil singer was tantamount in getting indigenous music to Middle Australia.

Both “Treaty” and “Djapana (Sunset Dreaming)” entered the U.S. dance charts.
