John Denver Rides Again
Anyone who was a music fan during the 1970s can tell you John Denver dominated Top 40 radio during that decade. Beginning with his 1971 breakthrough hit, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” Denver kept the hits coming, selling 33 million records and releasing 23 studio albums before he perished when his experimental plane crashed offshore near Pacific Grove, Calif., in 1997.
A list of Denver’s biggest hits are like a radio station’s 1970s playlist and include “Thank God I’m A Country Boy,” “Sunshine On My Shoulder,” “Annie’s Song,” and, of course, “Rocky Mountain High.”
Hollywood was also taken by the bespectacled mop-haired gentleman, giving him a starring role alongside George Burns in 1977’s “Oh God,” directed by Carl Reiner.
Colorado was also enchanted with Denver, naming him the state’s Poet Laureate in 1974 and selecting “Rocky Mountain High” to be one of the state’s songs in 2007.
Now former members of Denver’s band are striking out on their own tour, playing the classics while video of the star flows across the big screen. Presented by the singer’s estate, it’s an evening of Denver and his incredible legacy.
