Tango On Over To Yo La Tengo’s Website
A post from guitarist/pianist/vocalist Ira Kaplan on Matador Records’ blog explains that the mixes will only be available to download between Dec. 21 at 12 p.m. EST and Dec. 22 at 12 p.m.
The mixes, which are made up of tunes from the band members’ record collections, were originally sold during the band’s Hanukkah residency in its hometown of Hoboken, N.J., earlier this month. Kaplan made sure to point out that “the music is not BY us, just SELECTED by us.”
You have several mixes to choose from. In addition to the mixes from Kaplan and his bandmates Georgia Hubley and James McNew, Norton Records founders and musicians Miriam Linna and Billy Miller have also compiled a set of tunes for the 24-hour online sale. Or you can download Three Lobed Recordings’ mix, which was sold during Night 6 of the Hanukah residency and includes tracks (some of which are out of print) by Sonic Youth, Jack Rose, William Tyler and more.
Each of the downloads are priced at $10. Kaplan said, “every penny will be donated to our pals at Norton Records, who were very nearly wiped out by Sandy.”
According to Norton Records’ blog, nearly all of the label’s stock at the Brooklyn warehouse was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy including the label’s “LPs, CDs, 45s, picture sleeves, CD booklets, record labels and more” in addition to the stock on other labels that Norton distributes.
The staff writes in the post that “the entire Norton archive went underwater” from master tapes to correspondence with Norton artists to old magazines and fanzines dating back to the 1940s.
Norton Records has added a “donate button” to its website and says that all donations will go towards re-manufacturing record jackets and sleeves for the vinyl that can be salvaged.
