2013 Newport Jazz Festival: Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea

The first annual jazz festival in the U.S. will mark its 59th anniversary in August with a lineup described as a mix of legends and emerging artists. The roster includes Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Natalie Cole, Esperanza Spalding and Gregory Porter.

Newport Jazz Festival takes place in Newport, R.I., at the Tennis Hall Of Fame Aug. 2 and Ford Adams State Park Aug. 3-4.

Cole takes the stage Friday, Aug. 2 for “An Unforgettable Evening” featuring the Bill Charlap Trio with special guest Freddy Cole.

The festival is celebrating Shorter’s 80th birthday with an Aug. 3 performance from the Wayne Shorter Quartet featuring Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade along with special guest Herbie Hancock.

The Saturday schedule also includes Spalding, Porter, Michel Camilo Sextet, Terence Blanchard Quintet, Robert Glasper Experiment and more.

Chick Corea & The Vigil with Christian McBride, Tim Garland, Marcus Gilmore and Charles Altura perform Sunday, Aug. 4. The final day of the festival will also include sets from Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra, The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band under the direction of Paquito D’Rivera, Joshua Redman Quartet, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and more.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Jan. 17. Friday ticket prices range in price from seats in the south stands for $40 to premium east/west boxes or gold circle seats for $100. Saturday and Sunday tickets are sold individually for $74 in advance. A limited number of adult two-day passes are available for $135. Children and student tickets are also available.
