Cascade Shed Noise Debate

Residents who live near the Cascades Park Amphitheater under construction in Tallahassee, Fla., are voicing concerns about noise as the city works to iron out a noise ordinance.

A  study reportedly determined that night concerts at the venue would bring noise levels to about 82 decibels, which is about eight times louder than the normal night-time soundtrack.

The city has never had a noise ordinance, so officials are said to be working on establishing one that limits noise level to 85 decibels, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

A mid-January meeting of the parties involved included about 25 residents who also reportedly object to how large the project has morphed beyond the original plan without any input from them.

The facility was to be a small, open-air stage to host local orchestras and acoustic acts. It has since expanded to include a large concrete stage with metal-and-fabric roof, sound system and room for about 4,000 concertgoers. Officials are working to address neighbors’ concerns, the paper said.

The shed, under construction since 2010, is scheduled to open in September.
