Global Spectrum To Run
XL Center

Venue operator Global Spectrum on Feb. 7 won a 10-year contract to run the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., as well as Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

The Capital Region Development Authority voted unanimously to award Global Spectrum the contract. According to the Hartford Courant, also putting in bids were AEG, which previously operated the XL Center, and Capital Region Sports and Entertainment Group, which operated  Rentschler Field.

The contract is contingent on Global Spectrum securing an AHL minor-league hockey affiliate for the XL Center, as the Hartford Whale’s contract to play there expires this summer.

According to a memo put forward by authority executive director Michael Freimuth, Global Spectrum’s bid offered the most “out of pocket” capital investment.

The XL Center is said to need at least $16 million in improvements over the next decade just to sustain operations. Global Spectrum’s bid promises improvements to seating, signage and a VIP lounge, among others.

XL Center has major shows on its calendar, including George Strait, Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

Rentschler Field is primarily used for University of Connecticut Huskies football games, but has hosted occasional concerts over the years.
