Odds & Ends: Van Halen, Prince, Smashing Pumpkins

David Lee Roth got fans’ hopes up that Van Halen will tour Europe in 2013, but VH manager Irving Azoff says it’s not going to happen. Also, Prince is officially confirmed for SXSW, while the Smashing Pumpkins are playing somewhere in the Austin area.

Earlier this week David Lee Roth talked about Van Halen’s tour plans on Sirius XM’s “Opie & Anthony Show.” Rolling Stone posted a clip of the interview online, in which Roth tells the radio hosts, “We’re going to be playing Europe, probably 50, 60 shows outside of the states, starting at the end of this year.”

Since then Irving Azoff, who manages Roth’s bandmates Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen, has done his own interview to set the record straight on the band’s tour plans.

“Nothing’s been discussed yet,” Azoff told Rolling Stone. “Why would he say this? Dave’s a talkative guy.”

As for booking a tour or more dates in 2013, Azoff said, “Not unless something special comes up. It certainly wouldn’t be a tour of Europe.”

After postponing a set of Japan dates because Eddie Van Halen needed to undergo surgery for diverticulitis last August, the band will make it to the island nation in June. The group will also play Stone Music Festival in Australia in April and Rock USA in Oshkosh, Wis., in July.

Prince’s debut performance at SXSW is no longer a rumor. Yep, The Purple One will really be at La Zona Rosa March 16. According to the festival’s website, there are two ways to get tickets to the exclusive show, presented by Samsung. SXSW is holding a ticket drawing now for fans with SXSW Platinum and Music badges. The other option applies to fans who own Samsung Galaxy phones. Mashable.com reports that 250 lucky TecTile Wall participants will receive tickets. Finally, the Smashing Pumpkins will close out Red Bull Sound Select’s 120 Hours in Austin showcase on Saturday. For now, the SXSW show’s location is a big secret. To find out where Billy Corgan and the band will be you’ll need to RSVP to the show and follow Red Bull Sound Select on Twitter for updates.
