Live Music Precinct For Sydney?

Sydney could have its first live music and cultural precinct.

Darcy Byrne, mayor of the suburb of Leichhard, wants to rezone the club strip of Parramatta Road to cover live music, comedy and theatre, small bars, and ancillary music businesses.

A proposed live music development control plan would allow late operating hours and greater noise levels, and insist that new residential and commercial buildings on the road have “appropriate sound insulation.”

“It could become for Sydney what Broadway and Tin Pan Alley have been to New York,” Byrne said.

He now has to get cooperation from the Minister for Planning Brad Hazard as well as neighboring councils. Byrne recently got Leichhardt council to adopt a Good Neighbourhood policy to end the prosecution of live music venues by getting venue operators and disgruntled neighbors to meet amicably to discuss issues before resorting to court action.
