The University of North Dakota is betting that somebody, somewhere, is either looking for a huge lawn ornament or is otherwise enough of a fan to spring for a full set of “Home of the Fighting Sioux” letters from the front of
The university is auctioning the letters, 2 feet high with the full set running 70 feet in length, to offset the cost of removing six Fighting Sioux signs from the arena and adjacent Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, according to the Grand Forks Herald. Bids started at $1,000.
The university has retired the Fighting Sioux mascot, with 68 percent of North Dakota voters electing to drop the nickname deemed “hostile and abusive” by the NCAA.
The auction closes March 29 and can be found here. The bid at press time was $7,000.
