N.O. More Music

The BUKU Music + Art Project, a music festival near the Mississippi River in New Orleans, garnered enough noise complaints that the city council stepped in.

Following a measure proposed by two councilwomen, the council directed city departments to notify it when any outdoor music event is planned within four blocks of the river.

Apparently the BUKU event could be heard for miles, reaching residents of Algiers and Gretna. The lineup included Kid Cudi, Calvin Harris, Kendrick Lamar, Primus 3D and many others.

“It sounded like it was right in the house with you,” a Gretna resident said. “You didn’t sleep; I did not sleep at all. I was up until after midnight.”

Councilwoman Kristin Gisleson Palmer said the council action is a first step “toward a more comprehensive permitting process for outdoor music.” She added the city no longer has employees trained to take decibel readings to determine how loud music is.
