‘Toots’ Hibbert Attends
Attacker’s Hearing

The 19-year-old man that threw a vodka bottle that hit Frederick “Toots” Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals during a May 18 concert in Richmond, Va., faced a judge June 7.

Hibbert traveled from Jamaica to attend the hearing for William C. Lewis Richmond General District Court. Lewis is charged with felony malicious wounding for tossing the bottle during the band’s set at the Dominion Riverrock festival at Brown Island. Hibbert was struck in the head as he performed and suffered a deep head cut, which abruptly ended the show.

The band’s remaining tour stops in Maryland, New York and New Jersey were postponed after the incident. Hibbert, 70, is said to be undergoing medical tests and treatment.

Lewis’ attorney, Christopher Collins, said his client, who waived his right to a preliminary hearing, “is devastated” by what happened.

A grand jury is scheduled to hear the case July 1.
