Lucero’s ‘Biggest And Best’ Family Picnic

Lucero’s 15th anniversary celebration continues with next month’s . Following a U.S. tour this spring and the release of the EP “Texas & Tennessee,” the six-piece Memphis-soul act says the 2013 Picnic will be “the biggest and best yet.”

The band isn’t exaggerating when it says this will be the biggest Lucero Family Picnic it’s ever put on. The Aug. 10 event at Riverfest Amphitheatre in Little Rock, Ark., marks the group’s first-ever amphitheater headline show.

Another first for Lucero is the band will perform 2002’s Tennessee, known as one of its all-time fan favorite albums, from start to finish at the Picnic, along with another set of Lucero classics. The out of print LP is being re-pressed for the event. Although “a wider reissue of Tennessee is being planned for sometime in the future,” the initial re-pressing is limited to 500 copies.

Oh, and something else new this year – tailgating with the band! The ticketed Lucero Family Picnic VIP Tailgate & BBQ is open to fans 21 and over.

Celebrity tattoo artist Oliver Peck, who owns Dallas’ Elm Street Tattoo and who you might have seen on Spike TV’s “Ink Master,” is your host for the event. He’ll be on hand to tattoo a few fans with the badge of honor known as Lucero’s “L” logo.

The Lucero Family Picnic lineup also includes Wanda Jackson, John Moreland, and guitarist Brian Venable’s father, Guy Venable. Guy isn’t the only family member taking the stage. Singer Ben Nichols’ brother, Jeff Nichols, who wrote/directed the 2012 film “Mud,” will be there to hold a Q&A. Plus, local skate team ThEnjoyLife will perform tricks for the crowd.

Tickets for the Lucero Family Picnic are on sale now.

Before it’s time to start up the BBQ at the VIP Tailgate, Lucero has some more gigs to play. Tonight the band will be in Fort Collins, Colo., followed by a few more nights in Colorado and an appearance at Open Highway Music Festival in St. Louis Aug. 8.

The band has a few more U.S. dates lined up in August and then Lucero will kick off a European tour in the Netherlands Sept. 3.
