Kim Gordon’s Body/Head On Tour

Along with an exhibition of her visual art opening in New York City in September, Kim Gordon’s fall plans now include a U.S. tour with her new band. The former Sonic Youth vocalist/bassist has formed an “improvisatory guitar duo” with Bill Nace.

Body/Head’s label Matador Records has a run-down on how the new project began, explaining that after Gordon and Nace had worked together “in various loose formats a few years ago … the Body/Head concept evolved more specifically in early 2012.”

Sonic Youth split in late 2011 after wrapping a South American tour and announcing that Gordon and her husband/fellow band co-founder Thurston Moore were separating after 27 years of marriage.

Matador says that when Gordon and Nace first teamed up, Body/Heat “was almost entirely instrumental – lattices of interwoven feedback rainbows, with bits recalling everyone from Heldon to Keiji Haino.” Now Kim’s vocals are “an intrinsic part of their musical architecture.”

After releasing a tour EP for Nace’s Open Mouth Productions and collaborating with The Dead C’s Michael Morley on the Body/Gate/Head LP Glare Luring Yo, Body/Head will put out its debut album on Matador in September. Being issued as double LP/CD/digital album, Coming Apart is due out Sept. 10 in the U.S. and Sept. 16 in Europe.

The fall tour begins the same day as the U.S. release with a gig in Brooklyn, N.Y. A few days before that, Gordon’s exhibition of her visual art, “Design Office Since 1980,“ opens at NYC’s White Columns gallery Sept. 7 and runs through Oct. 19.

Here’s the tour itinerary so far:

Sept. 10 – Brooklyn, N.Y., Union Pool
Sept. 12 – Los Angeles, Calif., Echo
Sept. 14 – San Diego, Calif., Various Venues (San Diego Music Thing)
Sept. 21 – Lexington, Ky., Various Venues (Boomslang: A Celebration Of Sound & Art)
Sept. 24 – Chicago, Ill., Museum of Contemporary Art
Sept. 25 – Detroit, Mich., Museum of Contemporary Art
Oct. 2 – Augusta, Ga., Various Venues (Augusta Westobou Festival)

In addition to Body/Head performing Sept. 14 at San Diego Music Thing, Gordon has signed on as one of the event’s Sept. 13 speakers.

According to Matador, more fall dates will be added “at unexpected venues and events.”
