Evansville Residents Look To Save Amphitheater

Some Evansville residents are pushing a campaign to save a park’s amphitheater that was shut down last year because of possible safety problems.

Michael Fetscher says he started the Save Mesker Music Amphitheatre page on Facebook this week after many people posted comments about a photograph on his own page of weeds growing around the site. More than 4,000 people are already following the new page.

Fetscher tells WFIE-TV he hopes city officials will see the support for the amphitheater and allocate some money toward repairs.

The amphitheater opened in 1951 and renovations have been estimated to cost more than $9 million.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Lloyd Winnecke tells the Evansville Courier & Press he wants to restore the amphitheater but first wants significant feedback from the public.
