Odds & Ends: Jay Z, Kanye, David Bowie, Lupe Fiasco, Bieber
Now, as for exactly when Jay Z will be back in North American venues? Hova hasn’t revealed those details yet. All we know is that folks at Roc Nation say the dates will be announce “soon” and that the North American gigs will be scheduled after the Magna Carter World Tour’s sold-out international run.
After wrapping his “Legends Of The Summer” outing with Justin Timberlake in August, Jay Z kicks off his next trek Oct. 3 in Manchester, England. European shows in support of Magna Carta… Holy Grail are booked through late October.
Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s reputation as an autocratic ruler accused of human rights abuses and corruption didn’t stop Kanye West from performing Saturday at the wedding for the leader’s grandson, 23-year-old Aisultan Nazarbayev.
The New York Times notes that Kazakh news agency Tengrinews reports the rapper was a personal guest of the president at the reception, which took place at the Royal Tulip hotel in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
According to TMZ’s sources, Kanye was paid somewhere “in the neighborhood of $3 [million]” for the performance.
Speaking of TMZ and millions, the gossip site says it has the exclusive on a lawsuit accusing Lupe Fiasco of working with convicted drug kingpin Charles Patton to hide millions from his estranged wife.
The suit claims the rapper helped transfer more than nine million dollars into various bank accounts to keep the cash away from the estranged wife in her ongoing divorce with Patton.
Lupe’s lawyer told TMZ the “allegations are baseless and will be proven false at trial. There are no secret accounts and no illicit instructions.”
Justin Bieber had a busy Labor Day weekend, from reportedly being involved in an altercation at a Toronto nightclub to making an appearance at a Phish show.
There are conflicting reports about the incident that took place around 3 a.m. Saturday at Unium Nightclub. TMZ says a male clubgoer charged at the Biebs, grabbed the singer’s shirt “and attempted to take him down, but failed.” The pop star’s security took over and apparently pulled the alleged attacker to the ground, as seen in pictures on TMZ.com, which notes that Bieber defended himself with “a fury of kicks.”
The nightclub’s manager, Orin Bristol, tells a different story, explaining that the so-called attacker was a fan asking for a picture.
“The fan was just a small little guy. He wasn’t being aggressive,” Bristol told the Toronto Star. “Security was a bit aggressive. There weren’t punches thrown really; it was more of a shoving match and pushing match.”
The Star notes that during the spat Bieber lost a gold chain reportedly worth $40,000. The pop star seemed to be having a better time when he was spotted Sunday at Phish’s show at Dick’s Sporting Good Park in Commerce City, Colo.
The rumors continue about the possibility of David Bowie booking his first shows since 2006.
The Mirror reports that promoters are ready “for a huge bidding battle” over the British musician. The newspaper says Live Nation is trying to tempt the British singer to play London’s Olympic Park next year with “a multi-million pound offer” and that AEG is coming up with its own offer that’s expected shortly. AEG supposedly wants Bowie to take the stage at Hyde Park.
For now, the singer’s rep says fans will have to keep waiting on those rumored gigs. In response to the offers, a spokesperson for Bowie told NME, “There are currently no plans for any live dates.”
