Box-office receipts for the summer ended with a record $4.7 billion in revenue, wrapping on Labor Day with “One Direction: This Is Us,” which took in an estimated $18 million for the three-day weekend.
Lee Daniels’ “The Butler” earned more than $20 million during that same timeframe.
Blockbusters like “Iron Man 3” also buoyed summer sales.
The box office saw a 10.2 percent increase over last summer, with attendance rising 6.6 percent.
The Johnny Depp-fueled “Lone Ranger” lost about $190 million.
Other duds were “Turbo,” “After Earth,” “White House Down,” “The Wolverine” and “The Hangover Part III.”
