Senegalese Singer Youssou N’dour Removed From Gov’t

Grammy-winning singer Youssou N’Dour is no longer Senegal’s tourism minister, according to the Cabinet list announced by new Prime Minister Aminata Toure.

Over the weekend, President Macky Sall dismissed his former premier in the first major shake-up of his government since he was elected in a landslide victory in March 2012. Toure, his former justice minister, was appointed prime minister, becoming the second woman in the West African nation’s history to hold the post.

On Monday, she announced the 32 members of her Cabinet, and N’Dour’s name did not appear on the list. No reason was given for his removal.

The 53-year-old N’Dour tried to run in the 2012 election but was disqualified on a technicality. He became tourism minister in April 2012.
