Frankie Goes To Work

Frankie & The Heartstrings is the hardest working band, according to the Association of Independent Music, which handed out its awards at London’s The Brewery Sept. 3.

The show had live performances from Franz Ferdinand and this year’s Outstanding Contribution To Music winner Billy Bragg, and was once again hosted by broadcasters and champions of new music Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens.

Bragg’s award was presented by Glastonbury Festival chief Michael Eavis. Lamacq was also honoured with a Special Recognition Award presented by Sheffield singer songwriter Richard Hawley, marking 20 years broadcasting for the BBC and his unwavering support of independent artists.

Other winners included Enter Shikari (best live act), The xx (best “difficult” second album), and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (most played new independent act).

The Pioneer Award went to legendary industry veteran Geoff Travis, founder of Rough Trade Records and the Rough Trade Record Shop.
