Get Cozy With Andrew Bird

Some artists put on Christmas shows while others celebrate Hanukkah with a series of concerts. For Andrew Bird, it’s all about being cozy. Or, as the Dutch say – gezelligheid. Tickets go on sale this week for his annual Gezelligheid performances.

The indie folk multi-instrumentalist notes that the Dutch term “loosely translates to ‘extra extra cozy.’”

But you should really attend one of Bird’s annual shows to really understand gezelligheid. We’ll let the website Stuff Dutch People Like explain.

“Dutch people love this word. They are fiercely proud of this word and all it represents. I would go as far to say that gezelligheid is the modern day religion of the Dutch. They love it, they need it and they respect it. …

“This word has NO accurate English translations. Yes, it’s a sad fact my friends, but it’s true. People will try and try again to tell you that it means cozy… or quaint… or familiar…or friendly… or a nice atmosphere… or a fun time, but you get where this is going; no one word can really sum it up. Gezellig and gezelligheid are less about a word and more about a feeling. Yes, this is starting to sound all chakras-and-healing-crystals to you, but truthfully, gezellig(heid) can only really be felt.”

Now that that’s covered, let’s talk about the itinerary for the intimate shows, which will feature “instrumental violin pieces amplified only by the signature giant Specimen horns.”

With special guest Tift Merritt, the gigs are scheduled Dec. 9-11 at Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church, Dec. 16-17 in San Francisco at Sherith Israel and Dec. 19 at Los Angeles’ Immanuel Presbyterian.

Presale tickets are available Oct. 3 and tickets go on sale to the public Oct. 4.
