Garden Theater Blooms Again

A more than 100-year-old theater in midtown Detroit is making a comeback following a lengthy renovation.

The 32,000-square-foot Garden Theater reopened Oct. 17 with a Deltron 3030 concert.

The theater – modeled after The Pageant in St. Louis, Mo. – had a previous life as a movie house but has sat vacant for years. It features a 1,300 capacity and will host “concerts of all kinds” with an emphasis on Motown and bluegrass, according to a local nonprofit development organization website.

“We’re not looking to be the Fox (Theatre),” Michael Byrd, a partner in the Woodward Garden Block Development, said, according to Midtown Detroit Inc.

“We’re looking to be the best at our level.”

The development secured the remaining financing needed last year to wrap a $12.3 million rehabilitation on the long-closed venue.

Additional components in the works include an adjacent apartment building, retail and office space.

Upcoming shows on the books for the Garden Theater include Mint Condition, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
