Roseland Ballroom To Close In April

Roseland Ballroom, the venerable Manhattan venue that has been the site of concerts from Sinatra to the Stones and recently hosted a birthday party for Hillary Clinton, is to close its doors in April, according the building’s owner and Live Nation.

The club, which holds about 3,500 people, will shut down after being in operation for more than 95 years.

“The owners of 239 West 52nd Street have operated Roseland Ballroom for over three decades,” Roseland Development Partners said in a statement. “Managing Roseland has been a labor of love, which is why the owners have deferred major changes for all these years.

“Though final plans for the property will not be made until next year, redevelopment of the property is the likely outcome. Roseland will cease operations at the end of April 2014.”

Live Nation booked the venue and joined Roseland Partners in making the announcement.

“We enjoyed being a part of the history of the Roseland Ballroom and we will continue to celebrate its rich history with an unapalleled closing run of shows,” Live Nation added. “One of the best things about New York is how our citieis continues to reinvent itself and we look forward to sharing our tremendous plans for live entertainemtn in the city for 2014 and beyond.”

Roseland Ballroom originally opened in 1919 as a dance club and, in later years, moved to its present location and operated as an ice-skating and roller rink, a ballroom and dance hall.
