Update: Metallica In Antarctica

Metallica has announced a “journey to the bottom of the earth.” That’s right, it’s official that James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo are headed to Antarctica in December for a very special concert dubbed “Música Zero.”

Earlier this week the internet was all a buzz over a Colombian website for Coca-Cola Zero that was running a contest for a Metallica concert in Antarctica, set for sometime in December.

Today Metallica revealed the concert will take place Dec. 8 near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini.

“After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth . . . except for one,” the band said. “That is all about to change as we are set [to] travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!! We are partnering with Coca-Cola Zero for one of the most unique and special concert events in our career. … We’ll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification . . . a real first for us!”

To attend the show you’ll need to win tickets through Coca-Cola Zero’s contest. Although Pollstar’s earlier post on the contest (based on the translation of the Colombian website) noted that it was open to Colombians in Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Villavicencio, Bucaramanga y Cúcuta, Metallica’s website clarifies that the contest is actually open to lucky fans in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico.

To enter the contest, which begins Oct. 28 and runs through Nov. 22, fans are being asked to share what they would be willing to do to attend the show by tweeting their responses using the hashtag #CocaColaZeroAntartida.

In addition to attending Metallica’s show, the winners will get to take a 10-day cruise that launches from the port of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. It seems like an appropriate place to start the trip with Ushuaia’s motto translating to “end of the world, beginning of everything.”

The cruise includes lectures by specialists, audiovisual material on scientists’ work and environmental information.

The show will be streamed live to participating countries in Latin America via Coca-Cola.tv and Coca-Cola.fm. Plus, Metallica promises the show will be “filmed to share with everyone at a later date.”
