Workers clear debris from the floor of the shuttered Houston Astrodome Nov. 5 as residents vote on whether to approve a referendum for $217 million in bonds to pay for turning the dilapidated, domed stadium into a convention center and exhibit space.

The massive sale included stadium seats, Astroturf sections, autographed lockers, dugout benches, concession stand equipment, turnstiles, VCRs, projectors and more.

The Astrodome, opened in 1965, was the first multipurpose domed stadium and the former home of MLB’s Houston Astros and the NFL’s Houston Oilers, now the Tennessee Titans.

It was also the location of the 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

The facility closed in 2009.

The fate of the historic but dilapidated building itself rests in the hands of residents who will vote Nov. 5 on a referendum authorizing $217 million in bonds to cover recreating the venue as a convention center and exhibition hall.

City officials have said that if the referendum fails to pass, the building will probably be demolished.
