Camden Settles Concert Suit

The city of Camden, N.J., has agreed to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit stemming from a confrontation between police and a man outside a concert in 2007.

According to court documents obtained by the Daily Journal, the city will pay $750,000 while admitting no liability in the suit brought by the mother of Brett Katzenmoyer, who died in August of that year.

The suit claimed Katzenmoyer was handcuffed, clubbed and punched in the face after he was arrested outside an O.A.R. show.

He was later taken to a nearby hospital and died five days later.

In a statement to the paper, the city said it “believes that this is a fair resolution of the litigation in consideration of all factors.”

The settlement will reportedly be funded mostly through insurance.

During court proceedings, the city said Katzenmoyer was arrested after a woman complained she’d been assaulted in the parking lot outside the concert, the Journal reported.

The man’s blood-alcohol level was reportedly three times the legal limit for intoxication.

Under the terms of the settlement $427,000 will be distributed to Katzenmoyer’s mother with the balance going to attorneys’ fees, the paper said.
