Pickup Trucks, Sugar Shakers & The Good Stuff

Saying many of today’s country music songs sound the same, a music critic has put together a video featuring different acts singing about pickup trucks, tight jeans, brews and other delights.

Entertainment Weekly critic Grady Smith came up with the idea of assembling the video while compiling a list of the top country albums of 2013.

“I hope country fans will stop settling for this derivative junk,” Smith wrote on YouTube when he posted the video. “I love a dumb party song every once in a while (including some of these!), but when they’re the only flavor available, they get old very, very fast. Here’s to better music in 2014.”

Although Smith called the genre “something of a mess right now” when writing his EW top country albums article, he did state that “there was great music to be found” that made him “hopeful for 2014.” Included in his top ten are Jason Isbell, Kacey Musgraves, Brad Paisley, Gary Allan and The Civil Wars.
