It’s not clear if the festival intended making an announcement anytime soon, as the news came via the band’s tweet, which said: “June 27 – Glastonbury.”

The tweet was followed by an official statement on the Glastonbury website:

“We’re very pleased to announce that Arcade Fire will headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2014, on Friday 27th June.”

Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler later told Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, “It’s such a communal rite of passage in the UK. Just on a musical level, we’re super-excited to strap on our wellies and let it rip.”

The band topped the UK album charts in November with its fourth album, Reflektor.

The Sun is among the papers predicting Dolly Parton will also be at Glastonbury.

The Arcade Fire announcement bears out festival founder Michael Eavis’s pledge in September that all three headline acts would be Glastonbury newcomers.

Lily Allen was already announced for the final day of next year’s Glastonbury.

Other rumoured Glastonbury acts include Fleetwood MacPrinceDaft Punk and Kanye West, who would also be playing the event for the first time.

Glastonbury is June 25-29. The festival is already sold out.
