Congressman Clay Aiken?
Aiken has reportedly consulted with politicos in Washington, a strategist in Raleigh, N.C., and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, according to the Washington Blade, the city’s gay newspaper, says the singer is “actively considering” throwing his hat into the ring and notes Aiken is “sounding and acting like a candidate.”
Aiken is reported to be working with Raleigh-based political strategist Betsy Conti. Conti worked for former Carolina Gov. Bev Purdue and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. Citing a “Democrat Party source,” the Blade said Aiken is also meeting with pollsters at Hart Research Associates.
But neither Aiken or the people representing him have commented on his alleged congressional aspirations, according to the Blade. If he runs he won’t be the only Democrat seeking the office. Former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco is reportedly going to announce his candidacy on Monday.
North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional district is currently represented by Republican Renee Ellmers.
