NY’s BAM President To Step Down Next Year
The head of the Brooklyn Academy of Music has announced she will step down after leading the institution for 35 years.
Karen Brooks Hopkins says she plans to leave in June 2015.
A search committee has been formed to find her successor.
Hopkins is credited with positioning BAM as a cultural destination and expanding and renovating facilities for film and performing arts. She also helped launched several citywide cultural festivals.
Under her leadership, the performing arts center said its endowment grew to $90 million by 2013.
As president, Hopkins partnered with major arts and cultural institutions including the Kennedy Center and New York City Opera to create programming and events at BAM.
She was named to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s transition committee in November.
