Cassandra Wilson’s Black Sun & New Dawn

March has Cassandra Wilson performing with Harriet Tubman while her shows slotted for April and May have the jazzy lady performing selections from one of her best-known albums.  More after the jump.

Wilson’s March calendar has her playing guitar and singing in three shows with the progressive jazz/rock trio Harriet Tubman, founded by her longtime collaborator and guitarist Brandon Ross  and including bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer J.T. Lewis.  The shows are dubbed “Harriet Tubman + Cassandra Wilson Present: Black Sun.”

But wait, there’s more.

Wilson will begin an international trek in April called “Blue Light To A New Dawn” in which she’ll perform selections from her 1993 release Blue Light ’Til Dawn.  Her first release on Blue Note, the album showcased Wilson’s interpretations of various songs ranging from Robert Johnson’s “Come On In My Kitchen” to Joni Mitchell’s “Black Crow” to Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey.”

Commenting on a January concert in New York in which she played Blue Light ’Til Dawn from start to finish, the Wall Street Journal said, “Wilson and her group proved that ‘Blue Light’ remains a wellspring of music that appeals to body and soul.”

In tandem with the upcoming shows, Universal will release an expanded version of Blue Light ’Til Dawn this spring.

Aside from touring, Wilson is working on an album of Billie Holiday songs set to be released in 2015, marking the legendary singer’s 100th birthday.
