Police Wound DJ At Atlanta Nightclub

A disk jockey was wounded in a shootout with off-duty police officers early Monday behind a nightclub hosting an album release party for rapper Rick Ross, DeKalb County police said.

The off-duty officers were working security at the Velvet Room and in full uniform when they responded to the sound of gunfire behind the club at about 4 a.m. Monday, said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander. They came upon a man who turned and fired gunshots at the officer, Alexander said, prompting the officers to shoot him in the leg.

“They were doing what they were trained to do,” Alexander said. “They took all the necessary actions to protect themselves and each other.”

The wounded suspect was identified to investigators as a DJ who worked at the club, Alexander told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. According to the nightclub’s website, Ross and Sean “Diddy” Combs had been scheduled to attend a party Sunday night celebrating the release of Ross’ new album, Mastermind.

The police chief said he had “no reason to believe” any celebrities were involved in the nightclub shooting.

The wounded man’s identity was not immediately released by police.
