Skrillex’s Mothership Tour 2014

Skrillex is trying something different with his upcoming excursion. Although the Mothership Tour 2014 features some of the largest venues of his career, he’s been working with Red Bull to perfect the production instead of just going bigger, bigger and bigger.

Production director Corey Johnson said, “We’re not starting over, but we are resetting: new lighting, new video, new spaceship, new everything.”

Johnson added, “We’ve pulled back the technology side this time. Don’t get me wrong, the show is still very technologically based, but we don’t want it to impede the performance – we don’t want to bury Sonny (aka Skrillex) in production. In the dance music production world, there’s this mentality that everything has to be massive. I feel like we’ve peaked out – the whole scene is peaking now – with this idea that we have to keep putting more and more stuff on the stage.

“For us, it’s not about creating the craziest and most technologically advanced thing. We’re just developing tools to represent Sonny’s music visually and performing those tools in a very effective way that resonates with the music. We’re literally trying to bring his music to vision, and our goal is to not make people go blind.”

Skrillex notes that he’s still planning on “going big.” And Red Bull’s website points out that of course there will still be lights, video, special effects, pyrotechnics – and eight 53-foot tractor-trailer trucks to transport all of that.

Skrillex says, “Nobody touches Red Bull right now when it comes to thinking up groundbreaking projects and ideas and actually making them happen. My crew and their crew have a lot in common, as people in terms of thinking big and going big so they were an obvious choice as a partner for my 2014 tour.”
