Donaldson was an original member of the internationally popular group formed in 2007 whose show celebrates Irish and Scottish heritage.

Donaldson was also a well-established solo artist in the Glasgow folk scene. He released The White Rose in 2011 and The World In My Mind in 2013 and won the Irish Music Awards in 2011 and 2012.

Celtic Thunder producer Sharon Brown said on the group’s website that everyone involved is in shock.

“When starting Celtic Thunder, I wanted to cast a mature, dependable man as one of the characters. Over the seven years since, I learned that George Donaldson was the embodiment of such a man,” Brown said. “A kind, loving, gentle giant, George was as affectionate as he was a professional. I am devastated at his sudden and untimely death.”

Brown told Pollstar that Celtic Thunder’s tour of Australia and the U.S. as well as its Celtic Thunder cruise will go on as planned.
