Industry Noize: Tunica Casino Closing Doors
Harrah’s Casino in Tunica, Miss., will close its doors June 2, Caesars Entertainment has announced.
The casino, which houses the 2,458-capacity Harrah’s Event Center, has reportedly seen years of decline in gambling revenue in the region, attributed to declining spending during the recession and increased competition from nearby casinos in Arkansas.
And while there are many loyal gamblers in the market, it’s simply not “enough to support three properties,” a spokesman said.
As many as 1,300 workers could be laid off in the closure.
Caesars has owned the casino since 2005 when it merged with Harrah’s. This is the second casino in the area to close its doors. Isle of Capri shuttered in 2002 and the building has since sat empty.
