Prince No Longer Slave 2 WBR

Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol and scribbled “slave” on his face during a dispute with Warner Bros. Records over rights to music he recorded on the label.

The Purple One has long been emancipated from WBR, but now he’s got the rights to the music back in a deal announced April 18.

The agreement ends years of battle, stemming from Prince’s 1978 to mid-1990s reign, during which he recorded key projects like Purple Rain, 1999 and Around the World in a Day.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed, but WBR announced Prince would release “previously unheard material” from his tenure at the label and a 30th-anniversary edition of Purple Rain will be released this summer.

For his part, Prince said in a statement the he’s “pleased with the results of the negotiations” and that he’s working on new music apart from Warner Bros.
