Steve Backer Dies
Steve Backer, 76, a well-known jazz record exec, died of pneumonia in Englewood, N.J., April 10.

Backer is considered a stalwart of jazz promotion. Through 40 years of business, he supported acts like Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill and The Brecker Brothers.
During his time at Arista Records, Down Beat magazine gave album of the year honors to three records that Backer promoted as head of the jazz division.
Writer David Sokol is working on Backer’s memoirs, according to the Los Angeles Times.
