Smoking At The Symphony

Classical music and cannabis may not at first glance appear to go hand in hand, but the Colorado Symphony Orchestra could change all that with the announcement that the organization will host a series of concerts this summer sponsored by members of the marijuana industry.

Classically Cannabis: The High Note Series – billed as fundraisers for the CSO – will feature three bring-your-own marijuana concerts at Denver’s Space Gallery showcasing themed music and gourmet foods.

CSO executive director Jerry Kern told the Denver Post the organization has struggled financially in recent years, and noted the series will help reach out to a new demographic.

“We see ourselves as connecting classical music with all of Colorado,” he said. “Part of our goal is to bring in a younger audience and a more diverse audience, and I would suggest that the patrons of the cannabis industry are both younger and more diverse than the patrons of the symphony orchestra.”

Marijuana event producer Edible Events is organizing the series and has lined up backers that would like to “brand their brand with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and also give back to the arts,” owner Jane West told the paper.

Cultivation supplier Ideal 420 Soils is the lead sponsor of the events, which cater to 21-and-over crowds.

Kern added that in order to thrive in difficult times, he sees the CSO being very dependent on relationships in the corporate community.

With marijuana “a legal business in our state,” it could be a new way to tap into benefactors to keep it afloat in coming years.
