The concept for a PAC on the campus of the Macomb, Ill., college was first floated in the 1970s, according to WIU President Emeritus Al Goldfarb. It’s expected to cost about $71.8 million today.

In a statement, Gov. Pat Quinn called the project “an investment in the school’s future.”

“The Center for Performing Arts will not only create short-term construction jobs, it will also further solidify WIU’s role as a cultural center for western Illinois and serve as an economic development engine,” said Illinois State Sen. John Sullivan attending the announcement, according to the McDonough County Voice.

The Center for Performing Arts will be a 130,000-square-foot, two-story facility. It will include a 1,400-seat auditorium and two smaller theaters as well as rehearsal studios.

The building could open by the spring of 2018.
