Psych Eval Sought For Stringbean Killer
The Tennessee Board of Parole has asked for a psychological evaluation of John A. Brown, convicted of killing Opry star David “Stringbean” Akeman and his wife, Estelle, in 1973.
Brown, 63, and his cousin Doug Marvin Brown were convicted of waiting for the Akemans at their cabin in Ridgetop, Tenn., Nov. 10, 1973, as the two returned from a performance at the Grand Ole Opry.
Brown was convicted of shooting Stringbean as he walked into the cabin, then shooting Estelle in the yard.
Brown presented his case for parole in April and the board decided he must undergo an evaluation on his propensity for violence.
Brown is expected to learn his fate in October. Stringbean Akeman also performed on “Hee Haw.”
