Introducing Berklee’s Online Degrees

Boston’s Berklee College of Music might as well be Hogwarts for traveling musicians and tour managers who want to get music degrees but that should change a great deal when the famous music school offers them online in September.

Several touring musicians – including those from Nine Inch Nails, Dave Matthews Band, and Sugarland – have earned certificates online since 2002 but could not receive degrees over WiFi.

The same goes for those industry execs who would need to rent space in Boston to get degrees. Beginning in the fall, Berklee is selecting 300 students for the program’s inaugural online Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Studies in the categories of music business and music production.

Tuition is 60 percent less than attending the physical college. The music business degree includes required courses like Music Business Trends and Strategies, and Music Business Leadership and Ethics.

There are elective courses such as Artist Management and Copyright Law. The music production degree has required courses like Critical Listening and Art of Mixing. Electives include Hip-Hop Writing and Production and Introduction to Game Audio.

Kim Logan, a Nashville-based artist, told Pollstar the online service has been a boon. She’s in the middle of the spring semester but is touring seven out of the 12 weeks of the course.

“I can work on the beach, in a van, at a coffee shop before a gig, or in a green room,” Logan said. “It’s the perfect situation for someone who has already begun to work professionally in the music industry, but still wants to finish their degree.”
