Security Guard Sues AEG

A New York woman who claims she was fired for refusing to tame her Afro hairstyle has filed suit against her former managers at AEG Worldwide.

Tiffany Bryan previously worked as a security guard at the  in Brooklyn, and alleges her bosses repeatedly ridiculed her hair before finally letting her go from the position, according to court documents obtained by the New York Post.

The woman told the paper she wanted to keep her scalp free of chemical relaxers after she successfully beat bone-marrow cancer in 2008.

“I just didn’t want to put any chemicals in it after that,” she said. “After you lose it, you don’t want to do anything that might cause a problem again.”

Bryan claims she was hired in September 2013 and didn’t receive any comments about her hair until March, when her supervisor allegedly told her she “looked like she stuck her finger in a socket and was electrocuted.”

The comments didn’t stop there. A few days later, security manager LaNiece Tyree allegedly told Bryan she “needed to do something with her hair” to tame it.

Bryan told the Post she agreed to wear a headband but felt her boss crossed the line after asking her to wear her hair in a ponytail.

“Plaintiff Tiffany Bryan is a black woman who was ridiculed, discriminated against and effectively terminated for the way she wears her hair,” the suit says.
