Werchter Biggest And Best

Belgium’s Rock Werchter has won so many awards that it is undoubtedly one of mainland Europe’s best festivals, and now it’s by some way its biggest.

With doubts over where German promoter Marek Lieberberg will stage the new festival he’s starting to replace Rock am Ring and no news of how big it will be, Werchter’s 88,000 people per day makes it mainland Europe’s largest. Only the UK’s Glastonbury, which gets 140,000 per day, is bigger.

As all Glastonbury passes are four-dayers, Werchter actually had more unique visitors with 149,500.

At this year’s Werchter, 67,500 people bought four-day passes – with 55,000 staying on the campsite – and 20,500 one-day tickets per day.

All tickets were sold in advance.

This year’s festival was the first to use a mobile water treatment unit. The Festival Park at Werchter isn’t connected to a sewage network, which has previously meant waste water has been collected by tankers and ferried to treatment stations. This year a mobile water treatment unit with a capacity of 30 cubic metres is fed through the site from a holding basin with 500 cubic metres capacity. Micro-organisms transform the organic waste into activated sludge, carbon dioxide and water.

The lineup helping Rock Werchter stay at the top July 3-6 included MetallicaArtic MonkeysPearl JamKings Of LeonPixiesThe Black KeysEllie GouldingDamon Albarn, and Skrillex.
