One concept for the Detroit Red Wings’ proposed new arena and surrounding entertainment district unveiled by the city’s Ilitch family is shown here in an artist rendering.

The project will include the construction of a new, world-class arena built concurrently with the district, which will connect existing downtown development efforts and venues including the Fox Theatre, Comerica Park, MotorCity Casino Hotel, Ford Field, the Detroit Opera House and the Fillmore Detroit.

“It’s always been my dream to see a vibrant and energized downtown Detroit,” said Ilitch Holdings chairman Mike Ilitch. “I want people to look at Detroit’s new sports and entertainment district and see what I see: the potential for something very special. I couldn’t be more excited and proud to bring this vision to life.”

The family plans to invest tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure improvements to lighting, sidewalks, green spaces and streets that will coincide with arena construction.

The plan will also help transform blighted surrounding blocks into five new neighborhoods, Ilitch Holdings said. Groundbreaking on the project is slated for the fall and the arena is expected to open in summer 2017.
